Darrin Scott Sherrill is a Family Man

Despite the demands of his career and his love of piloting aircrafts, Darrin Scott Sherrill always maintains time to spend with his family. Whether it’s going to dinner with his sons or scheduling a family vacation, Darrin Scott Sherrill believes that spending time with family is paramount to living a successful life. “Halfway through my career, I realized that money isn’t everything,” says Darrin Scott Sherrill. “I can make a living my entire life, but I’ll only have one family.”

To spend as much time with his family as he can, Darrin Scott Sherrill of Georgia has incorporated his family into every activity that he enjoys. For instance, Darrin Scott Sherrill included his family in his undertakings with the Hummer Club. Several times throughout the year, Darrin Scott Sherrill would schedule road trips with his family in their Hummer. Aside from witnessing expansive landscapes together, Darrin Scott Sherrill and his family enjoyed the thrill of riding a Hummer through various terrains.

Darrin Scott Sherrill also enjoys the ocean and has owned two Sea Rays since February 2001. As an active member of the Sea Ray Club, Darrin Scott Sherrill would schedule two-week trips with his family on the boat. They would sail to the Bahamas, the Florida coast, and Chesapeake Bay together. “It’s not just the thrill of seeing all these amazing places,” says Darrin Scott Sherrill, “it’s about the people you share these memories with.”

Aside from adventurous family outings, Darrin Scott Sherrill is involved in the day-to-day happenings of his family. Particularly, Darrin Scott Sherrill enjoys supporting his sons in their scholastic and extracurricular endeavors. His son Michael attends Lanier Technical College in Cumming and is a pilot as well. Darrin Scott Sherrill’s other son Kevin is a wrestler who received a wrestling scholarship to the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. As an active athlete, Kevin also gained an interest in Judo, which has encouraged both Terri and Michael Sherrill to take Judo lessons as well. Even though their athletic capabilities are on different levels, Darrin Scott Sherrill views Judo as another opportunity for the family to spend quality time together.

Darrin S Sherrill Shares Piloting Passion with Son

Many fathers enjoy spending time with their children. From playing catch to going to a ball game together, there are many father-son activities in which family men can engage. Darrin S Sherrill of Georgia is known for sharing one of the most unique passions with his son Michael. Both Darrin S Sherrill and Michael enjoy aircrafts and are certified pilots. “It’s not just a passion that we have in common,” says Darrin S Sherrill, “it’s something that we can do and enjoy together.”

Since becoming a certified pilot is such a rigorous path, Darrin S Sherrill and his son both share similar experiences and struggles. On February 8, 2007, Darrin S Sherrill received his private pilot Airplane Single Engine Land certification, which allows him to maneuver single engine aircrafts that only land on land. Though he received his Private Pilot certificate, Darrin S Sherrill wanted to continue advancing his skill level and certification. He later received his Instrument Rating on March 10, 2007 followed by the High Performance certificate on March 13, 2007. By May 18, 2010, Darrin S Sherrill achieved his Commercial certification, which means that he can now accept payment for his piloting skills. In total, Darrin S Sherrill has 675 hours of flight time – and it continues to increase every month.

With hundreds of hours of flight time, Darrin S Sherrill of Georgia eventually inspired his son Michael to learn to fly as well. On September 15, 2009, Michael achieved his Private Pilot certificate for Airplane Single Engine Land. Currently, Michael has also received his Instrument Rating. “I don’t expect my sons to follow in my footsteps or emulate my life, but it’s great that I get to share the joys of flying with Michael,” says Darrin S Sherrill.

Both Darrin S Sherrill and Michael say that they particularly enjoy the beauty of Georgia from the sky. Since Georgia is so expansive and has a varied landscape, Darrin S Sherrill says that the experience of seeing Georgia while flying is breathtaking. “Sometimes you don’t realize the beauty of what’s around you until you see it from a different perspective,” says Darrin S Sherrill.

Darrin S Sherrill Enjoys Club Memberships

Throughout most of his life, Darrin S Sherrill has been a member of numerous clubs. Whether or not he was an active member, Darrin S Sherrill enjoyed networking within the clubs and meeting other people with the same interests as him. Aside from networking and the social aspect of clubs, Darrin S Sherrill championed every club’s mission of growth, enrichment, and promoting awareness.

For instance, Darrin S Sherrill joined the Hummer Club in June 2000. While he and his family enjoyed many road trips throughout the years in their Hummer, Darrin S Sherrill also appreciated how the club aimed to promote the safe use of Hummers, educate members on guidelines, and encourage harmless land-use and community service. “Every club I join has a mission or purpose that I whole-heartedly support,” says Darrin S Sherrill. Though he and his family have enjoyed their association, they sold their Hummer this past spring and will not be renewing their membership.

However, Darrin S Sherrill and his family are members of other clubs that they are still able to enjoy. Since February 2001, Darrin S Sherrill has been involved with Club Sea Ray. Again, Darrin S Sherrill enjoys networking with thousands of other Sea Ray owners as well as discussing the technical aspects of their equipment. “Being a member also reminds me to spend time with my family,” says Darrin S Sherrill. “The past two summers, we’ve spent time on our Sea Rays by cruising around Florida or traveling to the Chesapeake Bay.”

Though Darrin S Sherrill is also a member of the Mercedes Car Club, he has never participated with his local chapter in Georgia. “It’s not that I don’t want to get involved,” says Darrin S Sherrill, “but it’s difficult to find the time, especially when you’re a member of multiple clubs like me.” Regardless, Darrin S Sherrill prefers to maintain membership because he enjoys the association and hopes that one day he’ll be able to dedicate more time to the club. Darrin S Sherrill is also a member of the Lake Lanier Association and celebrates the club’s commitment to cleaning up the lake and ensuring environmental health.

Why Darrin Sherrill is an Involved Father

Recently, there has been a national discussion on the absence of a father figure for many children in America. In fact, according to the United States Census Bureau, one out of three children is raised without their biological father. “It’s a shame,” says Darrin Sherrill, who is involved in the lives of his own children. “I enjoy spending time with my children and hope that any other father would feel the same.”

Despite his demanding career and time in the air as a pilot, Darrin Sherrill remains invested in his children even as they have moved away from their Georgia home. One of Darrin Sherrill’s sons, Michael, received the prestigious Auburn Spirit Foundation Scholarship. The funds are available for 4 years beginning in the fall of 2008. “I’m proud of Michael,” says Darrin Sherrill. “He’s studious and ambitious. I definitely think there’s a correlation between academic success and the presence of a strong father figure.”

Darrin Sherrill’s theory is correct, according to the National Fatherhood Initiative. Children who grow up without a father figure are four times more likely to live in poverty compared to their peers. Furthermore, children raised in single-parent households are 4.3 times more likely to get involved in drugs and alcohol. Darrin Sherrill believes that because of his involvement in his children’s lives, they’ve chosen to participate in extracurricular activities instead of substance abuse.

In fact, Darrin Sherrill’s other son, Kevin, received a wrestling scholarship to the University of Northern Iowa. Though Kevin received a wrestling scholarship, he eventually changed his major to Art, which was encouraged by his parents. “You know, parents should encourage their children more to follow their passions,” says Darrin Sherrill. “I was proud of Kevin for receiving a wrestling scholarship, but I’m just as proud of him for pursuing something he loves.” Darrin Sherrill also enjoys that his son is now studying in Alpharetta, Georgia, which is much closer to home than his initial choice of the University of Northern Iowa.

“I want to see my children succeed – that’s why I’m involved,” says Darrin Sherrill. “Whether or not they follow in my footsteps is up to them, but I want to be remembered as a positive role model in their lives.” Aside from being involved, Darrin Sherrill encourages other fathers to be positive figures by living a life of ethical character, professional success, and love.
